| Lahinch Golf Club: An introduction The seaside village of Lahinch hosted golf for the first time in early 1892, when members of Limerick Golf Club and Officers of the Black Watch Regiment marked out an 18-hole course. The renowned Scottish golfer Old Tom Morris came to Lahinch in 1894 and further developed the layout. He felt that Lahinch was the finest natural course he had seen. Dr. Alexander MacKenzie was a Scottish doctor with a great love of golf, who designed golf courses all over the world. He came to Lahinch and redesigned the course during 1927 and 1928. MacKenzie also designed Augusta National in Georgia, Cypress Point in California and Royal Melbourne, Australia. Further refinement has continued over the years and The Old Course at Lahinch continues to be a favourite with those from Ireland and abroad. A second links, the Castle Course, has been constructed across the road.
The South of Ireland Championship was established in 1895, making it the second oldest amateur championship in Ireland. The South is the most important regular fixture in the Lahinch Golf Club calendar.
